Apple had their keynote address today, which is fancy for saying “a meeting where they come out and show off their latest and greatest stuff to the media”, and the biggest news of the day was the introduction to the new iPhone touted the iPhone 3G S in which the “S” stands for “speed”.
First, off, it looks exactly the same as the last one. The ad campaigns (see below) have hit the ground running and are already addressing that fact because they simply know it’s gonna get mentioned a bajillion times. It looks the same. Which shouldn’t bother anyone really because there’s just simply nothing wrong with the design right now….it’s still pretty much the best design out there. So don’t fix what ain’t broke I guess.
So whats new? Why do you care?
It’s faster….”much faster” they are telling us. Some applications will be up to 4 times faster. Even though they haven’t released any specs on the new processor. Plus the camera is much improved (3.0 megapixles compared to 2.0 on the old 3G). And now it has video too. It comes with an actual magnetic built in compass…for I guess, when the GPS fails? Someone needs to explain that to me more. The biggest news though seems to be the better battery life, which on paper sure doesn’t look all that better, but anything is better at this point. One things for sure…all this iPhone news has got me hyped up for the new Nokia N97!

I have stood in line for both iPhone releases 2G & 3G and was already putting on my calendar June 19th to go stand in line again to get the new 3G ‘S’ until I read the fine print. According to the Apple pre-order site I have to be at least 1 year into my 2 year contract in order to get the announced 199 or 299 price points. So I can do one of two things here. 1. Buy the new iPhone on day of release and pay 499.00 for the 32G OR wait till July 12th (which is my 1 year contract date) and get it for 299.00! Way to get your current user base about upgrading! DOH

Oh man, and coming from an Apple Fan like you…I know that’s gotta hurt. From everything I’m gathering this new phone really was geared to get the original iPhone owners to upgrade, and rope in some new people. New People = CHECK. Past Owners = Meh?!
This is true which why this does not make any sense I mean they let you get the good pricing last year going from 2G to 3G why all of a sudden put the brakes on and stick it to you??? With all the BS about support coming soon for MMS from AT&T and tethering “in the future” with all the other carriers supporting these features the keynote at WWDC really made them (AT&T) look like crap I am thinking the rumors are looking better and better about them teaming up with another carrier to offer service!
Installing 3.0 firmware now will let you know what I think after I have had some time to play with it!
Yeah it’s an ok upgrade. The camera has a neat feature where you tap the screen to focus. Meaning you can tap on a part of the screen you want to focus on. It also has an auto macro mode. The video mode looks cool to. You can actually grab the part of video you want and crop the rest out. Tethering is ok, I’m sure it will be expensive for that option. This phone should do good but I’m ready for the N97. I pre ordered mine but am still waiting for it. That should be an amazing phone but the only thing going against it is the initial price. They need to get it subsidized like the iPhone to bring the price down.
