So about a year ago this new comic book came out with lots of hype riding in with it. It caught my interest right off the bat seeing as I’ve been into ‘non-super hero’ type comics for awhile now. Really, Preacher is to blame for that!

The premise behind Kick-Ass is that there are no super heroes in modern day America (duh) and one boy decides to bring his day dreams to life and begin a life of heroics. Even though he’s a nerdy, non athletic, kid. You know, like me.

So you say “ok, why now would I be interested in a movie about that?” Well, take a look at the official trailer for the movie real quick. If you’ve already seen it, jump on by.

So yeah, either by now you are like “hell yeah, that looks sik as hell bro” or you’re like “ok, I knew he was gonna hit the pavement, and this looks retarded”. I agree with both parts. BUT, I only posted this to show that there’s definitely more to it than meets the eye as you’ll see with this second trailer…

So does it have a little more of your attention after that? I thought so. But I’m not trying to say that this is some deep psychological message of society or anything…I mean it is titled KICK-ASS. I just didn’t think the original trailer was doing enough to showcase this comic….er movie.

Finally, the last trailer. The one that should really make you think…ok, I’m going to see this movie even though Nic Cage has creeped me out lately and sucked mostly…

Kick-Ass hits theaters on April 16th of this year! I’ll be there!

First off it seems like 90% of the reviews I’ve checked online give big ole details into the movie’s plot…which I’m not about to do. This is simply my review. If you want to read the full story details, check them out on the wiki site or get more info on the official site. Or check the trailer below.

The main point I want to make right off the bat is that District 9 is definitely more than the commercials and trailers lead you to presume. This is NOT “Independence Day meets Transformers” which seems like where they pointed too in the ad campaign. It’s much more deep than both of those movies put together. I won’t go so far to say it’s so character driven & thought provoking that you forget it’s aliens from another planet we’re dealing with here. I also won’t say that non-sci-fi lovers will be right at home with it, but that it’s more of a perfect mix. Yeah, ok, it is refugee aliens misplaced here on Earth because their ship basically broke down and they pulled off the space freeway onto the shoulder we call home. It’s just that it’s such a ‘reality blanketed’ telling of this story that you can’t help but get sucked in.

I consider myself a sci-fi fan, but not an aficionado, so I can’t speak for the ubber space fans. All I can say is that District 9 held my attention until the very end and did an awesome job of getting me emotionally attached to the characters involved in one way or another.

Something that’s actually hard to believe is that this movie was done on a budget smaller than the movie The Hangover was made on. The aliens are of course CGI but it’s so well done that after the first sightings you completely forget that fact.

It’s also very refreshing that this movie is set in Johannesburg, South Africa. Though not the glamorous parts of town that’s to be sure. The main character played by Sharlto Copley, in virtually his first acting role, is so charming and innocent that you just can’t help but love the guy throughout his crazy ass adventure. An adventure so well paced and seamlessly laced with humor, emotion, & gritty video game type action, that when the final credits come up you’ll be left wondering what could come next. Which is the best sign that a movie is good, great even.

Speaking of video game type action….those who go (or went) to see D9 based solely on the ‘action’ scenes won’t be let down either. There are some fun weapons that do some FUN damage in this movie. The kind of fun damage that will have you doing the lean forward-clap-lift feet off the ground-laugh. Some people will even do the sideways fist-in front of gaping mouth yelling OOOOO DAYUM kind of reaction.

So like the title says, “quick review”. Ok maybe, almost quick review would be better. But there’s no number rating or star system for this one as I think everyone will like or even love this movie. I just want to say hat’s off to the minds that came up with this stuff and to those who can actually pull it together and make something so worthy of our attention out of it. This was Neil Blomkamp’s first big success that I guarantee will only be a prequel to much more!

Did you see it? Leave some comments below with your thoughts!
